Russian Experimental Films and Videos

Balagan is honored to present two Russian Experimental Film and Video programs. These program presents works by film and video artists of the 90s. Most of the works have been created at the numerous independent studios formed after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The programs are curated by Masha Godovannaya and sponsored by Finnair.

Woodcutter 16mm, 6 min, 1985
Director: Yevgeni Yufit

An eccentric and absurd comedy with endless non-stop fighting, chasing, murders and suicides which are intercut with Soviet symbols of peace and freedom--white doves flying away from hand of "pioneers"-- and documentary footage of the pioneers' everyday lives. Yevgenii Yufit was born in 1961 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In the early 1980s he began working as a painter and art photographer. In 1985 he set up the first independent film studio in Russia, MZHALALA FILM, which brought together artists, writers, directors and others sympathetic to radical aesthetic experimentation. At this studio Yufit made a number of films which have been shown at the worldıs major film festivals including Montreal, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam and Moscow. His film, "Daddy, Frost is Dead" was awarded the Grand Prix at the Rimini Film Festival in Italy. Yufitıs paintings and photographs have been shown in major exhibitions of contemporary Russian art since 1985, at the Sate Russian Museum, St. Petersburg; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf; Kunstverein, Hanover and The Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City. Works by Yufit are to be found in museums, galleries and private collections both in Russia and abroad.

Director: Leonid Tishkov

The second video performance by Leonid Tishkov and colleagues, which shows the wind as sculptor. Their first performance was depicted in the video "Pictures of Wind" which showed the wind as painter. Leonid Tishkov was born in a small town in the Ural Mountains in 1953. He graduated from a medical school in Moscow in 1978 but soon abandoned his career as a surgeon to become an artist. He admits that his medical education helps him in his art: "I very often use special drawings from medical books and I also use very special themes from biological science." His cast of characters includes walking stomachs, deep-sea divers, elephants, and assorted human organs.
